Bike to Work Week

Get that bike ready (if you’re not already riding it regularly)!!

May 17th kicks off Bike To Work Week.

Here’s a helpful piece on how to be ready – ride safely by keeping your bicycle in good condition.

At Standing Stone, we have an employee bike program – in short – employees can earn a free quality road bike to make their commutes green and healthy. The state is offering help.

That bike yellow rack outside? It’s part of the whole big picture – making a safe place to put your bike when you’re working is important too.

So get on your bikes and join us!

p.s. scroll down to May 23rd here…ride along.

Earth Day – Get Engaged Today and Every Day

What will you do to celebrate Earth Day today?

Taking positive action is the best way to observe the occasion, and it’s necessary to get all hands on deck to help our planet. There are lots of ways to do this, such as carrying out or helping with a volunteer project, making lifestyle changes, initiating better practices at work, learning, educating others….and more.

Need some ideas? Here’s a few to get you going.

  • Volunteer: There are tons of local and national organizations continually looking for volunteers to help them people events and stations to get the word out better. Google or grab your local yellow pages for groups to assist.
  • Start a compost: Standing Stone composts all pre-consumer food waste. It’s easy, simple, and no – it doesn’t stink when it’s done properly.
  • Refuse and reduce first: Cutting down on unnecessary things is the first step. The critical thinking about how we as consumers affect the upstream is the beginning.  Yes, still recycle – just remember it’s at the end of the equation, not the beginning.
  • Walk, bike, skateboard, inline skate or use a foot powered scooter to get to where you are going. Budget a bit more time and we all benefit – the least of which will be your body.
  • Look at what you eat: Purchase food and beverages responsibly. Ask where the stuffs come from. If the purveyor knows, have confidence. If they do not, ask more questions or shop where they know. Transparency is important.
  • Donate money to causes that are truly making strides towards an improved environment.

This just scratches the surface of what you can do. Every day.

Make Earth Day Every Day – we’ll celebrate with you.

Wood You?

Who likes to cozy up to a fire on a chilly day?

For those who have been to Standing Stone Brewing, you may know we have a wood fired oven.

We use our oven in variety of ways. One of the most obvious is in making our savory wood oven fired pizzas. We also use the heat every morning to bake all our hand made breads.  Beginning at 5 am, the restaurant begins to smell like fresh made rye, sourdough, focaccia and (yes!) cookies.

Throughout the day we warm up your desserts as well, like yummy chocolate chip cookies (should you want one warmed up!), marionberry cobbler, stir crazy cake,  and…the list goes on.

It acts as a useful tool for us and also provides a great deal of heat for the customers- nice in the cooler months to be sure.

We use Madrone as our fuel and since it’s a native tree, which fits the sustainability mission we strive for.

Come on in. The restaurant’s warm.

Always Sunny Inside

How many of you have a skylight of some sort where you work or live?

Standing Stone has a l-o-n-g skylight that runs the entire length of the building. It provides incredible diffused light throughout a large portion of the building.

As soon as the sun begins peeking up, the glow of pending daylight permeates through, even if it is cloudy and rainy. Like being in a greenhouse, it feels promising and gives off a positive vibe.

In addition to providing illumination, our building-long skylight cuts down on energy use (fewer light bulbs). We leave it unobstructed in the winter to provide light and warmth, and filter the open panel with a cover in the summer months to keep our guests cool.  Besides all this, it’s also interesting to look at.

Functional and beautiful.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Celebrate With Greener Cuisine

St. Patrick’s Day encourages us to break out our green. We think it’s a fine idea to keep this spirit up everyday.

Green – while certainly a color of many foods – is also how many folks talk about for sustainable, responsible ways of living and doing business.

Awareness and action are both important to help make this happen, and we do our part to work on these everyday. We think about this a lot in relation to food, since we serve lots of tasty fare from our kitchen, and savor foods of our own creation daily.

There’s certainly a lot of information to sift through to identify more sustainable foods…and there’s no single definition. We’ve made it a priority to form relationships with food producers and  vendors, and ask about their practices. We also check out their websites, and stay updated on important issues through sources like Grist.

When we are aware, we make smarter more informed choices. Our choices affect not only us – they affect everyone. When we choose a burger that’s made with grass-fed beef, we’re enjoying something that much tastier and healthier, and supporting a hardworking farmer that cares for the environment and their cattle. Here at Standing Stone look for ingredients that are as local and regional as possible, produced organically, made without synthetic agricultural chemicals or hormones, humanely raised and provided by companies that uphold good social, environmental and labor practices.

So this St. Patty’s Day, and every day, celebrate with ‘green’ food. We’ve got lots on our menu to help you there. These choices help bolster our economy and personal wellness while helping the planet. Yum!
