The Second Annual Harvest Dinner on Oak Street

A little over a year and a half ago, one of our staff members brought to the table an idea that made us ask ourselves, “why didn’t we think of that first?” Because we work alongside some brilliant people, we are fairly used to that feeling; but this idea just seemed like something we could not pass up.

The idea was to host an outdoor dinner on Oak Street towards the end of summer. We love throwing parties and we love interacting with the community outside of our own four walls, so this was a no-brainer for us.

As we started to envision what the event would look like, we quickly agreed that donating proceeds to a local non-profit would be a definite. We also knew that we wanted the dinner to highlight our local region, farmers and produce. After putting two and two together, we knew who the beneficiary would be–our friends at Rogue Valley Farm to School.

Harvest Dinner on Oak Street. It was the first event of this type we had ever planned and it was a true labor of love. With the help of local vendors, donors, restaurateurs and our awesome staff, the event sold out and was more of a success than we could have ever imagined….

That was, until this year.

The Second Annual Harvest Dinner on Oak Street was held in mid-October. The event sold out, and over 75 guests wined and dined under the stars in celebration of all things local. We were thrilled with the success of the dinner and happy to have hosted it another year.

What we didn’t expect in our wildest dreams, was that this “fun idea” our employee suggested would have such an impact on the community. This year, more than $34,000 was raised to support farm to school education, connecting local schools with local farmers and supporting a healthier community.

The generosity of guests and our sponsors helped Rogue Valley Farm to School raise more than $19,000 in cash and in-kind gifts.  That amount was matched with an additional $15,000 from a private foundation.

The proceeds will be used to hire a dedicated staff member who will be working closely with local producers and schools to create systems so that schools can readily incorporate healthy, locally grown and processed food into their school meal menus.

We are filled with pride and gratitude. As a company who is driven to have a positive impact on our community, the Harvest Dinner on Oak Street has become one of our greatest success stories.

Pints for a Purpose benefits Alzheimer’s Association– January 10th, 5-10pm

Happy New Year from Standing Stone Brewing Co. We have just come to the end of a very lively and enjoyable holiday season. It was very satisfying to be part of the holiday celebrations of so many families.

Here at SSBC we have a lot to look forward to in 2017, starting with a New Menu coming on January 4. When you have been in business for as long as SSBC has (it will be 20 years this Spring!) it is important to keep things fresh and creative.  Changing the menu from time to time also allows us to source the most seasonably sustainable food items that we possibly can. The new menu retains many long-standing favorites; and brings in some exciting new additions. I cannot wait to try the new Chicken Calzone with a pint of Citrine Pale.

On Tuesday, January 10 from 5-10pm, we will host our third Pints for a Purpose event of the 2016-2017 season. Each winter SSBC hosts five evenings from which we donate $2 from each Beer, and $1 from each Root Beer sold, to a local, charitable organization. In December we raised about $400 for the Maslow Project to help homeless youth. This month Pints for a Purpose will benefit the Southern Oregon Alzheimer’s Association.

In preparation for writing this I made an informal poll of my co-workers. Out of eight people that I asked, seven of them said that their lives had been touched by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. They said it was a grandparent, a friend or a neighbor. Some mentioned how difficult it had been to witness the mental and physical decline of a loved one and how hard it had been on caregivers. According to the Alzheimer’s Association website over 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Since its foundation in 1980 the Alzheimer’s Association has grown into a national, non-profit organization with a mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

With a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s disease, The Alzheimer’s Association Oregon Chapter provides education and support for people diagnosed, their families, and caregivers by providing information and resources, 24/7 telephone help lines, local support groups and educational programs, an annual caregivers conference and a nationwide identification program, MedicAlert + Safe Return, for people with Alzheimer’s disease who may wander and get lost

The goal of Pints for a Purpose is to raise cash to help the Alzheimer’s Association carry on its local work and to raise awareness about its programs. If your life has been touched by Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, SSBC’s Pints for a Purpose evening on January 10 is an opportunity to make a contribution to an organization that is invaluable in both fighting against and living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Pints For A Purpose Returns!

Well, Summer is officially here!  Whether hitting the trails, lakes or rivers, we’re all excited for outdoor adventures and warm weather fun here in the Rogue Valley. At Standing Stone, it’s also a time we look forward to kick off our annual Pints for a Purpose application period, which runs from July 1st to October 1st, 2017.  

If you aren’t familiar with the program, through our Pints for a Purpose we donate $2 of every pint of beer sold to an employee-chosen nonprofit group, on their designated benefit evening. The top five voted recipients gather family, friends, and supporters from all over Southern Oregon on nights running November through March.

Our great staff votes for the top five favorite organizations, and we’re always amazed at all the wonderful work being done by the people in our communities. We award each nonprofit a special evening, during which all pints sold between 5pm – 10pm contribute to their cause. The organizations send representatives to answer questions, offer information, and participate in the fun! You just enjoy a beer, some excellent company, and have a great time knowing you’re helping a passionate local organization.

Harvest Dinner on Oak Street

Harvest Dinner September 18, 2016

You are invited to join us for a special evening dining under the stars. “Harvest Dinner on Oak Street” is a community event benefiting Rogue Valley Farm to School. Some of the best chefs in the Rogue Valley will collaborate together to create a farm to table meal celebrating our local farmers and the bounty of our region.

We will be closing down Oak Street and transforming it for the evening into a beautiful, communal dining space. The chefs joining us will be Damon Jones and Franco Console of Larks Restaurant, Neil Clooney of Smithfields Restaurant and Bar, Javier Cruz of Standing Stone Brewing Co, and Coral Console of Luna Cafe + Mercantile.

Local craft beer, wine and cider will be poured throughout the evening along with live music from local favorites The Brothers Reed and DJ Veach. A silent auction will take place throughout the evening with some amazing packages donated from businesses all over the valley.

This will be a night you don’t want to miss! Join us for a fantastic evening of incredible food, drink and company and help us raise proceeds for a great cause. Life is Brew-tiful

Ashland is a town of great diversity, and our local beer haunts pay homage to that diversity. Considering we have three breweries in a 6.6 square mileage area, there’s more than enough options to go around. While we love our brews here at Standing Stone, we too like to branch out. Here are a few favorites that highlight the best of summer.

Just a stones throw (pun intended) away from our brewpub, is Gils. The sister restaurant to Ruby’s (all hail their great burritos!) they have over a dozen beers on tap from around Oregon as well as our border states. If you’re looking for a grapefruit forward beer similar to our Summer Squeeze, try the North Coast Belgium Golden (7.0% ABV.) One of the stronger ales on this list, it will make your mouth pucker at first with a sweet tang that finishes smoothly. Gils’ patio is perfect for savoring the crisp hops of this brew while viewing the mountains.

Down the hill on Hersey street is the hidden gem known as Swing Tree. Established only a couple years ago, this converted garage is making a name for itself; chief among their current brews is the Diablo Rojo (4.8% ABV.) Despite its daunting name, this is a smooth, Amber of an ale that beckons the far away flavor of fall apples, while still maintaining a fresh and light flavor to gulp in this latter era of summer. If you’re a die-hard Pilsner fan, this devil will make you reconsider your allegiance.

Back into the downtown crawl, is the mecca of impossible drink choices: The Growler Guys. Talk about endless opportunities with over fifty beers on tap. Yet even with all those options, there’s one that took home the gold for us, the Wizard Island from Mazama Brewing Co. (4.8% ABV.) Similar to a Widmer, this citrusy ale delights the taste buds with a burst of lemon but finishes with the backbone of a strong Amber.

Wherever your drinking travels take you, enjoy the bounty that comes from long days and the promise of a cold one to kick off happy hour.

Pints for a Purpose benefits Bee Girl Dec. 1st

We want to say a big “Thank You!” to everyone who turned out for our first Pints for a Purpose event. You all drank 213 pints of beer raising over $426 for our friends at Sanctuary One. What a huge success and great way to kick off the Pints for a Purpose program!

Bee Girl inspires communities to conserve bees and their habitat. They offer community beekeeping classes, public lectures on honey bee conservation, work with children through their Kids and Bees program and much more. Founder Sarah Red-Laird has built a dedicated team who are inspiring people all around the world to make a difference.

Why should you love honey bees? Because 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat is pollinated by a honey bee. Without bees, we have no food; and without bees, we hate to even say it, but we have no beer! These little guys are working hard to keep food on our tables and beer in our bellies. It’s the least we can do to give them a hand.

Here are 3 easy ways you can help, from the Bee Girl herself:

  1. BeePlant Flowers- Choose flowers that bees love like Lavender, Sunflowers, and Poppies. Avoid chemicals and adjust your mower to leave the clovers and dandelions on your lawn.
  2. Vote with Your Fork– Choose local, sustainably raised and farmed food choices. Not only will you support your local farmer and economy, you’re also helping to keep your local honey bee colonies thriving and healthy
  3. Create a Space in Your Heart for Bees– The more we care about honey bees, the more we can do to make choices that benefit them. Whether you’re keeping bees, or planting a garden bed full of flowers, every little bit helps.

Our Bees at the One Mile Farm

Pints for a Purpose benefits Sanctuary One Tuesday, Nov 10th 5-10p.m.

It’s time to kick off our Pints for a Purpose program! We couldn’t be more thrilled to announce Sanctuary One as our first recipient of the year. This Tuesday, from 5-10p.m, we will be donating $2 of every pint sold in the brewpub to Sanctuary One. Our staff selected this organization out of a handful of impressive non-profits and there is a good reason for it; they are hands down, awesome.

People, Animals & the Earth: Better Together

Located on 55 acres in Oregon’s beautiful Applegate Valley, Sanctuary One was established in 2007 as the nation’s first care farm. It was founded by a small group of visionaries who, despite all the naysayers, never wavered in their belief in the Sanctuary’s mission: to be a safe place for animals and a healing place for people while promoting environmental stewardship. 

Sanctuary One provides a safe home to rescued farm animals and house pets. Elderly, disabled, chronically ill, and emotionally traumatized animals who may never be adoptable recieve personalized attention, loving rehabilitation, and a peaceful retirement. The farm includes expansive gardens which not only provide rich vegetables and food for the animals, but opportunities for growth of the people who tend them.

So let’s get this straight; not only do they rescue, rehabilitate and give a beautiful life to all sorts of animals in need; they also offer their farm as a resource to at-risk youth and adults to heal and learn, all while caring for the animals and their 35,000 square foot garden. We think this is a beautifully fluid and sustainable approach to farming.

We hope you can join us this Tuesday, Nov 10th from 5-10pm as we raise funds for our friends at Sanctuary One. Remember, the more people there, the more proceeds we can raise. And those pints add up fast, so please bring a friend and know that the beer you are enjoying is directly benefitting an awesome organization!

Happy November! Pints for a Purpose 2015/2016

Fall is here and we are very excited to announce the 2015/2016 recipients for our Pints for a Purpose program. For those unfamiliar with Pints for a Purpose, let us explain. Each year, we invite local nonprofits to submit applications on behalf of their organizations and we as a staff vote to choose our top five favorites. November through March each group is awarded their own special evening, and from 5-10 p.m. $2 of every pint of beer sold goes straight to their organizations. We invite the group’s representatives to spend the evening with us, and share a pint as they answer questions, and offer information as to who they are and what they do. Here is the lineup for this year:

November 10- Sanctuary One

Sanctuary One provides a safe home to rescued farm animals and house pets. The farm includes expansive gardens which not only provide rich vegetables and food for the animals, but opportunities for growth of the people who tend them.

December 1- Bee Girl

To inspire and empower communities to conserve bees and their habitat. Bee Girl, a nonprofit organization founded by Sarah Red-Laird, aims to conserve our bees by educating the public on their importance through programs focused on community classes and events, public lectures, and their Kids and Bees program. 

January 12- Children’s Advocacy Center of Jackson County

To meet the needs of children and families in our community by providing a community-based, child-focused center that facilitates a compassionate, multi-disciplinary approach to the prevention, treatment, identification, investigation, and prosecution of child abuse.

February 9Rogue Valley Farm to School waterwatch

Rogue Valley Farm to School educates children about our food system through hands-on farm and garden programs, and by increasing local foods in school meals.

March 9- No LNG Campaign 

No LNG Exports Oregon is a statewide coalition of activists, experts, and community members with the goal of stopping two LNG pipeline projects in Oregon.

So there you have it! Last year, we raised over $2,300 (that’s 1,150 pints!) benefitting five different wonderful nonprofits including, Rogue Climate, Water Watch of Oregon, Friends of the Ashland Public Library, Rogue Farm Corps and Rogue Valley Earth Day. We are very happy to continue with the tradition and hope you join us at one (or all) of our Pints for a Purpose evenings this season.
