Pairing Craft Beer & Food

Not only is it wise to enjoy food when you drink alcohol, it’s more social enjoyable, and healthful…and it’s hip and trendy!

Trendy?

Yes. The rise of craft beer has attracted folks who also love fine food, and we all know they’re better together. Indeed, America recently celebrated this in fine fashion at  Savor in Washington DC, a food and craft beer extravaganza.

Handcrafted microbrews go with so many different things. Some folks pair items according to similarity, like zesty foods and a beer with spicy notes. Others like contrasts, like a solid stout and a delicate fish or salad.

There are lots of ways to join the fun. You can educate yourself, go to events, ask others for ideas and tap into resources available to learn more.

At Standing Stone Brewing Co we’ve got both fresh beer and fresh food made on site just for you. Come in and play with some pairing ideas and ask us for suggestions. We like savoring an Oatmeal Stout with Stir Crazy Chocolate Cake, or the Double IPA with a Valley View Beef Cheeseburger.

Come join us and share your favorite pairing discoveries. Enjoy the trend.

Latest Specialty Beer: Milk & Honey

Happy American Craft Beer Week!!

Mayor John Stromberg was our guest last night to kick off ACBW – he read a proclamation, tapped the specialty Milk & Honey Ale our brew master, Larry Chase, made in honor of ACBW, and then joined the happy patrons at the bar with the first glass.

Larry proceeded to take samples out to all tables and offer them all around (legal age patrons of course). The beer was met with licking lips and positive comments.

We call it Milk & Honey because Larry used lactose (an unfermentable milk sugar) and a honey malt for some residual sweetness to provide a nice, drinkable medium bodied beer. We also paired a special menu item – Habanero Chicken Tacos. Good combo!

“This ACBW specialty beer turned out to be a totally different kind of beer because lactose is primarily used in stouts,” says Larry.

So come on in soon to try it – limited time only.

We are also tapping into our first guest beer tonight at 6 pm – Ross from Walkabout Brewing will be here to share his beer (regular prices) and visit.

Cheers!

Taxes and Beer

SSBC Brewer Larry Chase

Here’s a short clip of our Brewmaster, Larry Chase, as interviewed last week per the pending Excise Tax issue, HR 4278.

Speak up to your congressional and local representatives if you agree. It’s gaining momentum and could still use community support (like calling our elected officials).

And when people – like you – speak up in support of the issues that help our nation’s small brewers survive and support the opportunity to thrive, we can all enjoy high-quality independent beer.

Cheers –

National Tavern Month – Celebrate with Us

Standing Stone invites you to get out and help Celebrate National Tavern Month!

That’s right – get out and show your support for what our brewing community does for the local economies, as well as the national economy.

It’s about getting out, showing up – enjoying the social company of friends and savoring quality beers. Food is a great match for beer and readily available at many brew pubs and taprooms, taverns and other establishments that sell beer.

Beer drinkers, far and away, are responsible, forward thinking (heat recovery systems anyone?), engaged in their community, give much back to their cities and towns, and in general want to make the world a better place.

Beer is an affordable luxury and one way to assist – when done responsibly – in much needed economic stimulus.

Come join us, won’t you?

Save The Dates: American Craft Beer Week is Coming!

Dear beer lovers everywhere,

American Craft Beer Week is coming up May 17th – 23rd.

House 753 resolution in 2006 got the national ball rolling, and here’s a 2010 bill supported by 111th Congress.

Standing Stone Brewing Company invites you to visit the Events Page of our website, as well as the Brewers Association website here to check in on what wonders await afforded by American Craft Breweries.

We’ll be showcasing beer & food specials each of the seven days of American Craft Beer Week. For those over 21 and for those under 21, we’ll feature events, special guests and more – stay tuned for the details as we nail them down.

Why?

Our brewer, Larry Chase, says, “Because celebrating your local breweries is a perfect example of what it mean to be American.”

Mark it on your calendars – May 17th-23rd.  Savor in the hearty bounty of America’s favorite pastime -beer!

Welcome Brewmaster, Larry Chase

Larry on grain delivery day

Larry Chase joined Standing Stone Brewing Company as our new Brewmaster earlier this year. He brings a wealth of brewing experience, from small brewpubs to commercial craft breweries.

Larry’s also traveled extensively across Europe and the US, visiting diverse breweries and pubs and, of course, sampling their creations to imbibe the best secrets.

We’re excited to add him to our team, as he’s known for his creativity and wide knowledge of beer styles. He’s already brewed up some great ideas for specialty beers to keep you satiated through the year.

The Brewers Association recently interviewed Larry. Check out the article to get to know more about the force behind our brew tanks.

After you’ve read it, come in and enjoy one of the tasty beers he’s put on tap. Larry would also be happy to give you a tour of the brewing area and answer any questions you have.

He especially enjoys chatting it up with other home brewers and trading tips so be sure to introduce yourself to Larry if you make your own beer.

Cheers!

p.s. It’s tax day – you deserve a good beer.

Standing Stone at Craft Brewers Conference

Do you recognize these people? And can you tell us what they are doing in Chicago?

Ashley, Alex, Jeff & LarryWell, it’s a group of fine folks from SSBC – and they are attending the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago, Illinois USA. It’s an annual conference for the Craft Brewing industry.

There are over 3400 people engaged in the brewing community present – brewers, brewpub operators, distributors, retailers, and a of variety vendors and suppliers. It’s a new attendance record for the BA in putting it on.

It’s an energetic atmosphere with all sorts of presenters addressing everything from technical brewing topics (lautering, mashing, water issues…) to marketing (social, online…) to food pairing with beer.

Why mention this?

Because education is key to continued growth and success. It helps SSBC better serve you all – with high quality beer, intelligent and informed staff and networking with others in the industry for best practices.

Birds of a feather…

350 Ale

350 Ale on the brain (photo: Ginger Jognson)

Our brewer, Larry, recently tapped our latest speciality beer – the 350 Ale.

He likes to let people know it’s a nice counterpoint to the Northwest hopped beers.  Nice big malty flavor, a little fruit aroma and flavor to it, and it’s at about 5.8% ABV (alcohol by volume).

Larry says it would be well paired with our tasty cheese quesadilla, the succulent lamb burger, and the yummy Marion berry cobbler.

Yes, beer AND dessert.

Come in soon – like many specialties – it’s on until it’s gone!

Cheers!
